Pipeline risks not worth small benefits

President Donald Trump’s attempt to ram through the Dakota Access and Keystone XL pipelines endangers America’s land and water, threatens our climate and violates the rights of Native Americans.

According to federal data, the U.S. already suffers hundreds of pipeline accidents every year, and we can’t afford more oil spills.

These pipelines would also harm our climate by carrying fracked oil and dirty tar sands crude oil. Canada’s tar sands oil is among the dirtiest in the world, and the risks involved in carrying it across our country for export greatly outweigh any small benefit.

Any jobs that might be generated by building the pipelines would be minimal and temporary. The Dakota Access Pipeline proposal is a grave affront to tribal rights, and would threaten the water supply of the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. It’s opposed by more than 150 Native American nations.

We must work together to stop these dangerous projects.
