Six scouts and two leaders from the local troop No. 538 recently completed a 60-mile, 12-day hike through the Sangre de Christo Mountains at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico.
Leaders Cory Heron and Derek Smith led scouts Flint Gervais, Ray Heron, Linn Smith, Jonah Taylor, Eli Spaeder and Lucas Spaeder through high-elevation trails while carrying all their needed supplies on their backs. The team was assisted by logistics coordinator Erin Gervais.
Scouts also participated in backcountry programs along the way, including rock climbing, mountain biking, fly fishing and gold prospecting. The were also part of a conversation program where they learned to help with upkeep of Philmont’s ecosystem.
