Have a squash-based dish you’d like to share with the community? Head to the fifth annual Zucchini Extravaganza from noon to 2 p.m. this Saturday at Bayfield’s Pine River Library.
Thanks to the late growing season this year, zucchini is peaking right now instead of in August when it is usually out, said Rivian Bell with the Pine River Garden Club, which hosts the event alongside the library.
In addition to kid-friendly activities such as the Zucchini Olympics and zucchini decorating, the event will feature activities for adults as well, she said.
This year, music for the event will be provided by the Cool Breeze Strummers, a local ukulele band.
The Grub Hub and Hong’s Garden will provide squash-filled food, but attendees are asked to bring their favorite zucchini and squash dishes – along with their best whole zucchinis.
“We’d like to make this the biggest potluck in Bayfield,” Bell said.
The Garden Club is also asking visitors to bring food to donate to Pine River Shares, which will then be distributed to families in need.
“It’s very important to support the members of the community who are lacking and need a little bit of help,” Bell said. “That’s something that the members of the garden club ... feel strongly about doing.”
