Durango is fortunate to have several high-quality candidates running for city council this spring.
In considering the choices Durango citizens have before us, I write this letter in support of one candidate, in particular, Melissa Youssef. I have known Melissa for many years, through outdoor activities and her service on the 9-R School Board; we have children of similar ages, and many mutual friends in the Durango community.
Over the years I have found Melissa to be an active listener, compassionate, respectful and genuinely interested in the issues facing our community. Melissa cares deeply about many issues most of us care about: high-quality education, recreation availability, economic prosperity, quality of life, future growth management and more.
I appreciate the perspective Melissa shares in her regular blog writings, where many relevant topics have been thoroughly researched and thoughtfully addressed. The variety of her blog topics and attention to detail represent a dedication to knowledge and reason in a time when knowledge and reason are increasingly marginalized.
I have also found Melissa to be an individual of high integrity and compassion, personable and respectful. I trust Melissa, not only because she is a good person, but because she has a demonstrated track record as an informed community-minded citizen who is invested in the future of Durango.
I am confident that Melissa is an excellent choice for city council and will help guide Durango toward a bright future. I encourage all eligible voters to please return your ballots and to include Melissa Youssef as one of your choices for Durango City Council.
