I was recently told the city of Durango has mandated that all public bathrooms be closed at midnight.
What are the homeless to do? Does the city think if they just close the bathrooms, the homeless will go away?
If we make homelessness illegal, will it stop it? If we get rid of Planned Parenthood, will it stop abortion? Just because you don’t believe it is right, it is not going away. Obviously not.
I think it is a human health issue to limit access to bathrooms and control how a woman deals with her pregnancy. Where do you think the homeless will go? Women will seek illegal abortions and die. The Animas River Trail is already full of human waste!
Often, our politicians make the worse decisions. Why not create some affordable housing and more shelters for the homeless and leave abortion alone and let women have a healthy alternative? It doesn’t matter how much you abhor the homeless or abortion. They are not going away!
Most of us are a paycheck away from dismal poverty. Poverty shouldn’t be such a stigma, but think about how many homeless you meet or people who are not in your economic bracket. Segregation is alive and well.
Wake up, Durango City Council, and take care of your people. Maybe we should close the bathrooms in the City Hall during the day, and see how you like that?
