We are very lucky to live in La Plata County where we have a quality of life experience not available to many others. Unfortunately, it comes with a high price tag. For many senior citizens, it’s getting really tough to fulfill financial obligations while trying to meet personal needs. When you’ve worked hard your whole life, paid your bills, taxes and been a good citizen, you deserve help if you need it!
If you’re a senior citizen, or know a senior who is experiencing budget constraints in today’s challenging economy, the National Council on Aging’s website, ncoa.org, can provide valuable online information. Once at their website, search for “Benefits CheckUp.” This page outlines the types of help available. On it you can answer a preliminary questionnaire and, if you qualify for assistance, make a confidential application in the privacy of your own home.
There are three senior centers in La Plata County in Durango, Bayfield and Ignacio. There’s also a group of citizens organized, since 1976, as the La Plata Council on Aging, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization on whose board I serve, who help all three senior centers and who are headquartered at the Durango/La Plata Senior Center at 2424 N. Main Ave.
We invite you to join us because we care. Applications for membership are available at the Durango center’s little thrift shop.
While you’re at the center, take a short tour of the facility and pick up a newsletter and some valuable brochures.
