It is simply counter-intuitive to believe that adding a known neurotoxin to our water supply will somehow improve our health. The fluoride neurotoxin used in Durango’s water is an industrial waste product originating from aluminum factories and fertilizer plant manufacturing in China.
In 1946, when fluoride was first introduced to us as a substance that would aid in the dental health of our populace, scientists knew little about fluoride. In the last 10 years, many new studies have uncovered evidence that fluoridation of our water supply might be severely harming our health.
These are studies by esteemed research groups such as the National Academy of Science, the U.S. National Research Council and a team of Harvard Scientists that say fluoride can cause such health problems as: harm to developing brains of our youth leading to lower IQ’s, hypothyroidism, bone cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, endocrine system disruption, pineal gland calcification and fluorosis. Fluorosis is a disease caused by too much fluoride being ingested by young children causing their teeth and bones to soften, weaken, and to become discolored, and which now exists in 40 percent of US adolescents.
These studies cry out for some sort of intervention on behalf of the citizens of our community. I do not see how we can just continue to dismiss these findings. Having read these studies, since 2010, and with the knowledge that most developed nations and over 90 percent of western Europe do not fluoridate their water, over 150 cities in North America and even a country (Israel in 2014) have chosen to abandon fluoridation of their water supplies as a measure of precaution, I would suggest that we follow their lead to protect our public health.
Utilizing a simple risk/benefit ratio, the benefits we may be getting from fluoridation, the reduction of dental cavities in our populace, simply do not outweigh the many potential harms that these studies suggest may well be caused by the fluoridation of our water supply. Let”s not take a chance with our precious health! Better to error on the side of caution.
