Two second-half goals gave the Bayfield High School girls soccer team its second win of the season against Telluride for the first time in head coach Jen Zelinski’s seven-year tenure.
Meaghan Mooney and Jaida Ross found the back of the net after halftime in a 2-0 win Saturday in Telluride.
“It’s nice to get that in there,” Zelinski said. “It’s a huge confidence-builder for the girls.”
The Miners’ goalie popped up a Maddy Duran free kick about eight minutes into the second half, but Mooney tracked it and scored it for the game’s first goal.
Duran was involved in Ross’ goal, too; she dropped the ball back to Ross in the 64th minute, and Ross finished with her left foot.
“They played awesome this weekend,” Zelinski said after the Wolverines’ 3-1 victory Friday at Ridgway. “I couldn’t ask for anything more. I’m very proud.”
BHS (9-3, 7-1 3A Region 5) has won three consecutive games while scoring at least twice in all three. The Wolverines will play Ignacio at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Wolverine Country Stadium in their home finale.
