Bayfield puts the B in the B&B Invitational

The four Bayfield High School track and field athletes left alive after Friday’s preliminaries further proved they belonged in the Aztec B&B Invitational’s finals Saturday in Aztec.

Jessie Roukema finished fifth in the girls 200-meter dash in 30.32 seconds.

Jessica Cusick took second in the girls 400-meter dash at 1:03.81.

Brian Mashak came in third in the boys 200-meter dash in 25.28 seconds.

Brady Fields finished fifth in the boys 110-meter hurdles in 18.54 seconds.

Those results combined with Friday’s finishes placed BHS third in the boys standings with 60 points and fourth on the girls side with 31.5.

Farmington won the boys meet with 123 points, while Aztec won the girls meet with 157.

The Wolverines will travel to the Terry Allen Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday in Pagosa Springs for their next meet.

Durango High School

The DHS contingent that travelled to Aztec battled windy conditions Saturday to place fourth on the girls side and seventh on the boys.

“The kids ran better in the prelims than they did in the finals. You just gotta run hard when it’s that windy,” DHS assistant coach Johnny Bertrand said. “It never rained, which was the good news.”

Mia Irwin of DHS finished third in the girls 100-meter hurdles in 17.18 seconds.

Shane Bisogno of DHS won the boys 100-meter dash in 12.17 seconds, while Justin Marcum finished fifth in 12.5 seconds for the Demons.

Marcum also took fourth in the boys 200-meter dash in 25.31 seconds.

Devin Lewis of DHS qualified for the boys 200-meter dash finals but did not record a time Saturday.

Zeb Soignier of DHS came in fourth in the boys 110-meter hurdles in a personal-best 18.16 seconds. He also finished seventh in the 300-meter hurdles in 44.51 seconds.

Ignacio High School

Christian Knoll was the Bobcats’ only competitor in Saturday’s finals. He took seventh in the boys 400-meter dash in 56.88 seconds.

Ignacio will join Bayfield at the Terry Allen Invitational on Saturday in their next competition.
