BHS baseball is undefeated against Colorado

Wolverines keep on rolling with a doubleheader sweep at Pagosa Springs

No team in Colorado has been able to beat the Bayfield Wolverines yet this season.

Bayfield High School (14-3, 6-0 Intermountain League) picked up two more wins on the road Saturday at Pagosa Springs.

Matthew Knickerbocker silenced the Pirates in Game 1 with a six-inning shutout. The Wolverines won 11-0.

It was Trey Lange on the mound in Game 2, and he held the Pirates to just two runs in a 14-2 victory.

“We had pretty good pitching and played good defense,” BHS head coach Jonathon Qualls said. “We had a whole bunch of hits, too.”

Knickerbocker allowed only three hits while walking one and striking out five in the first game. Zane Phelps pitched a perfect seventh inning in relief.

Lange pitched four innings and gave up only one hit in the second game. Kelton McCoy came on and finished the game on the mound for BHS. Lange had three strikeouts.

“Since spring break, it feels like the team has been playing a more complete game, with our pitching stepping up to match the hitting,” Qualls said. “We’ve thrown several different pitchers and have seen some good stuff from relievers.”

Brody McGhehey was 3-for-4 with a walk, one run scored, one run batted in and two stolen bases in the first game. Zane Phelps was 2-for-5 with a run scored.

Knickerbocker helped himself by going 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI, Lange was 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and one run scored.

Taed Heydinger went 1-for-1 with an RBI double, and Dillon Hoselton was 1-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.

In Game 2, Lange and Phelps both went 2-for-3 with one double and three runs a piece.

Bayfield is atop the IML standings at 6-0. With the tiebreaker against Alamosa in Bayfield’s favor and only two games remaining next Saturday against Centauri, the Wolverines are in firm control of the league.

BHS now is on a nine-game winning streak. The only teams to beat BHS this year are the junior varsity squads from New Mexico schools Farmington and Piedra Vista, but BHS has avenged those losses with wins of their own against those same programs.

“We’re still thinking about one game at a time right now, but it’s nice to see the roll we’ve been on,” Qualls said.
