The singles players turned it on Saturday for the Demons.
Durango High School won a boys tennis match 4-3 against Grand Junction Central. No. 2 singles player Alijah Konikowski helped deliver the win with a dramatic third-set victory (3-6, 6-3, 10-8) against Trace Levinson.
“Alijah pulled it out for us in come-from-behind fashion,” DHS head coach Dave Weisfeldt said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “He fell down 5-1 in the third set and 8-6 before rattling off four points in a row to seal it. Huge win for us.”
Fred Edwards made easy work of Bryce Atchison in the No. 1 singles match. The DHS senior won 6-3, 6-1.
Jake Beekman added a win for DHS at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), against Brigham Beckstead.
The No. 4 doubles team of Luke Meyer and Eno Ulshafer picked up Durango’s fourth win, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, against Tanner Bibeau and Brenden Felix.
“The guys are really coming along and stepping up there game,” Weisfeldt said.
Durango will travel to Montezuma-Cortez on Tuesday in its final match before the regional tournament in two weeks.
“We are going to work on getting ready to play, match toughness, getting solid warmups in,” Weisfeldt said. “We gotta be ready to play from the beginning at regionals and can’t take time getting into matches.”
