All abortions in Colorado – including in cases of rape, incest and when the health of the mother is in danger – would be illegal and access to birth control would be restricted by proposed Amendment 67. Supporters of this measure argue it is necessary to protect pregnant women. However, in 2013, the Colorado Legislature passed the Crimes Against Pregnant Women Act, allowing prosecutors to pursue criminal charges for unlawful termination of a pregnancy; and, this year, the Colorado Legislature adopted a law allowing women to collect damages for the unlawful termination of a pregnancy.
Rather than protecting pregnant women, Amendment 67 could subject any pregnant woman and her doctor to the scrutiny and intrusion of the government. For more than 130 years, the American Association of University Women has worked as a national grass-roots organization to improve the lives of millions of women and their families.
AAUW opposes Amendment 67. We urge you to consider the harsh and punitive intentions of this amendment and vote no on Amendment 67.
