Bats fail Bayfield baseball against Uintah

Heydinger strong on the mound

Bayfield’s bats were silenced Saturday.

Playing on the final day of Farmington High School’s Scorpion Invitational at Ricketts Park, the Bayfield High School baseball team fell 5-0 to Uintah High School of Utah.

The Wolverines fell to 1-2 to open the season after a 6-3 loss in eight innings to New Mexico’s Belen on Thursday and an 8-4 win against New Mexico’s Moriarty on Friday.

Saturday’s game was scoreless until the fifth inning, when Uintah came through with a run. The Utes carried momentum into the top of the sixth inning when it scored four runs.

“We didn’t get much going at all with the sticks,” BHS head coach Jonathon Qualls said. “We had guys on second multiple times with less than two outs, and we just could not execute or string anything together.”

Four errors cost the Wolverines, as Uintah played clean defense with no errors. Bayfield was held to five hits.

Austin Baughman and Fred Edwards both had two hits for Bayfield. Taed Heydinger pitched a complete game and was charged with one earned run while striking out two and walking none.

“Overall, he had a really good game,” Qualls said of Heydinger. “That last inning wasn’t all on him. He had an opportunity to help himself out with a bunt that should’ve been a double play, but two other errors in that inning should’ve held them to one run at most.”

Bayfield will have more than a week off to prepare for action on the Front Range with games coming against St. Mary’s and Manitou Springs.
