Bayfield girls soccer splits away games

The Bayfield High School girls soccer team opened the season with a split.

The Wolverines beat Center on Friday, 7-0, but were handed a 5-2 loss to Salida on Saturday to wrap up the weekend road trip.

Bayfield opened the season with league play by scoring relentlessly over Center (0-1, 0-1). Seniors Maddi Duran, Bryanna Isordia and Savannah Kaufmann all scored two goals, and Taylor Morris added a goal for good measure.

“We have some new talent, but we have a small team,” Bayfield head coach Jen Zelinski said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “I have some great senior leaders who stepped up and are the voices on the field. They are really working together.”

When Bayfield (1-1, 1-1 3A Region 5) took on Salida (2-0, 2-0) on Saturday, the Wolverines had a little more trouble getting things going. Because of the early season, many of the girls aren’t used to playing back-to-back days. Salida jumped out to a strong 5-0 lead at halftime, but Bayfield battled back and won the second half by holding Salida scoreless and scoring two goals of its own.

“We’re not in soccer shape yet, we need to just play soccer,” Zelinski said. “We have a brand new defense, so we had trouble with the forwards. There is improvement there. We need to be in game shape.”

Bayfield will be at home when it takes on Pagosa Springs at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Wolverine Country Stadium.
