Blake’s views far from well-rounded

The Oct. 9 Herald editorial endorsing Brad Blake for county commissioner highlights some political characteristics of moderate Republicanism, a day that produced admirable politicians like Bob Denier, the Liebs, Bud Deering and RT Scott. Phrasing like “strike some balance,” “well-rounded,” “breadth of views,” “help ensure diversity,” make us fondly reminiscent of the Log Cabin Republicans like Ted Roosevelt.

Do these complementary adjectives fully reflect Blake’s passion for constructive dialogue on complex issues like planning and fracking? We take voting seriously knowing fully well one little vote won’t make much difference. On one hand, most people we know are becoming increasingly skeptical about government’s ability to solve problems. On the other hand, we live and work here and see the need for planning. That requires cooperation and creativity from those who hold office.

Blake’s website and Facebook posts make his approach to governance very clear. He is a tea party candidate. Blake’s belief in U.N. conspiracies such as Agenda 21 is consistently used by far-right activists to undermine the protection of habitat. He expresses admiration for Cliven Bundy, the inspiration behind San Juan County, Utah, Commissioner Phil Lyman’s illegal trespass in Recapture Canyon. The “shut government down” approach to solving problems stands in stark contrast to the “well-rounded” criteria articulated by the Herald’s editorial board endorsement of Blake.
