As a working parent, I applaud the Boys & Girls Club of La Plata County for its outstanding after-school program.
My two boys attend the club each day. The staff members provide a physically and emotionally safe experience and they are caring and supportive. Club members are encouraged to try new things through fun, creative activities, among them dodgeball, guitar lessons, hands-on STEM experiments, arts and crafts, and Friday teen nights.
They learn leadership skills by embracing the values of duty, honor, courage, optimism, authenticity, heart and fairness, as they develop as engaged and productive citizens. My boys enjoy making new friends with kids from throughout the area reflective of the diversity that enriches the fabric of our community.
The club is accessible to all La Plata County families, the club’s fees are modest and, thanks to the generosity of individual, business and civic donors, the club provides need-based financial assistance to ensure the club experience is a choice for all.
Oct. 28 is Lights on Afterschool Day, a national celebration of quality after-school programs. After-school programs are key to ensure parents have a safe place for their kid’s after school, while parents are at work. With over 4,000 Boys & Girls Club’s across the country, we are very fortunate to have a club in Durango. Thank you to the staff members, volunteers, donors and club board of directors for ensuring our kids have a club, a place where every day kids are on their path to a great future.
