The Durango High School boys’ soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday to Grand Junction High School, 3-2.

The game, however, needed two overtimes before it was decided.

Cedar Newman gave DHS an early lead, scoring on a long free kick 15 minutes into the game.

The Tigers responded with a pair of goals, kicking in a rebound and then burying a shot from a crazy side angle, to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.

The Demons had to play with 10 players for much of the second half after Niko Korte received a red card.

With under two minutes left in the game, however, DHS scored the equalizer. Harrison Beattie played a nice ball into the goal box, and Ryan Bell was able to head it in for the score to send the game into overtime tied, 2-2.

In the first overtime, Newman fired a hard shot, but the goalie made a diving save to keep the game going.

In the second overtime, Grand Junction notched the game winner on a shot chipped over Durango’s goalie.

The loss was Durango’s first of the season. DHS slipped to 8-1-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the 5A/4A Southwestern League with the loss. Grand Junction improved to 7-5-0, 4-1-0 and overtook DHS for first place in the SWL with the win.

On Tuesday, the Durango boys soccer team beat Alamosa 10-0.
