Demons’ wrestling ‘ready to peak’

Gustavson and Hall podium at the SWL championships

The spring is back in the Durango High School wrestling team’s step.

The Demons competed at the Southwestern League championships on Saturday in Grand Junction and put two on the podium.

Grand Junction won the meet, and DHS head coach John Gurule wasn’t sure where the Demons finished in the final standings.

“It’s not really something you pay attention to when you’re not in the running,” he said.

Daniel Gustavson came in third place at 220 pounds, while Hunter Hall came in second at 132 pounds.

“We wrestled our butts off (Saturday),” Gurule said. “The improvement from the beginning of the season to now is tremendous.”

DHS decided to hold Matthew Lavengood out of the meet to make sure his shoulder is fully recovered for regionals.

The Demons will compete in regionals to potentially qualify for state Friday and Saturday in Montrose.

“With the way practice has been going and the way we’ve competed, I think we’re ready to peak for regionals,” Gurule said. “The boys came out and, whether they won or they lost, they made every single individual earn their win or their loss.”
