Don’t be so quick to blame the train

I have lived in Durango for almost 20 years. During that time I can recall at least six very significant wildfires in our immediate area and many more small wildfires.

By my estimate, there have probably been over 3,000 train trips to Silverton and Cascade, many of them being fund raisers, during that same period of time.

Before we get alarmed and restrictive because one train trip may have caused the last fire, let’s consider the simple statistics and recognize the number of train trips which have not been involved with any of the other fires.

Let’s also consider the huge part of our history and our economy attributable to The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.

Historically, wildfires are natural and recurring events.
