The Fifth Street Eatery plans to close at the end of month after about three years of serving up fried chicken and other Southern favorites near the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
Owner Annie Drysdale plans to sell all of her kitchen equipment, including chairs and tables, but not the concept of the restaurant.
“I’m not convinced it shouldn’t come back some way somewhere in a different place,” she said.
Drysdale doesn’t have any immediate professional plans after the restaurant’s planned closure on Aug. 30. But she does hope to spend time volunteering, focusing on her son and being more a part of the Durango community.
“I’m not exactly sure what’s going to happen, which is the blessing and curse of it all,” she said.
Fig and Bloom Cakes opened inside the Fifth Street Eatery in February, but owner Kelly Walker moved to Telluride in July because there was greater demand there, Drysdale said.
“She outgrew Durango in a very short amount of time,” Drysdale said about Walker.
Drysdale has a strong local following and it’s possible the closure might leave some craving the eatery’s fried chicken.
“It’s nice to have people say, ‘Oh, we’re really going to miss you,” she said.
