A relatively flat course allowed the Bayfield High School cross country team to excel at the Joe Vigil Open on Saturday in Alamosa.

All of the Wolverines improved their times from last week, according to BHS head coach Josh Walton.

The boys team finished 10th, led by Trevor Gabbard, who placed seventh with a time of 16 minutes, 42 seconds.

“He went out a little fast but slowed down so he could finish the race,” Walton said.

Luke Webb finished 15th with a time of 17:01. Caleb Sapa ran the course in 18:54, Alex Knight in 20:16, Justis Herrera in 21:06, Joey Sandrey in 21:56 and Alex Svanes in 23:12.

Aubree Lorenzen led the girls team with a time of 20:28, with Bridget Goddard close behind in 21:13.

Lexa Flemming finished in 22:28 and Maggie Zink in 24:24.

Bayfield will co-host the Southwest Cross Country Challenge with Durango High School on Saturday at Saul’s Creek east of Bayfield.

Walton expects between 12 and 14 teams to attend.
