Former No Way Jose owner running new restaurant

Jaime Lariz, a 16-year Durango resident who formerly operated No Way Jose on Main Avenue, is the new owner of San Marcos Mexican Restaurant on U.S. Highway 160 at the space adjacent to the Best Western hotel, previously home to Chavolo’s.

The former owner of No Way Jose has opened a new authentic Mexican restaurant – San Marcos – on U.S. Highway 160 West at the space attached to the Best Western hotel, previously home to Chavolo’s.

Jaime Lariz, a 16-year Durango resident, said his new eatery opened Oct. 1 after the owners of Chavolo’s decided to sell the business.

Having run No Way Jose for six years on the 1000 block of Main Ave., Lariz was eager open another restaurant after his closed in February 2014.

“I always wanted a bigger space, and the opportunity came up here,” he said.

Lariz overhauled the eatery’s menu, and now serves dishes from his hometown of Aguascalientes, Mexico – about a six-hour drive northwest of Mexico City.

He said since he’s taken over the space, business has steadily improved, drawing a healthy mix of people staying at the hotel as well as locals.

San Marcos is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.
