June 8 and 22, 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m.: Early Literacy Playdate. Explore early literacy and learning through hands-on sensory activities. Be ready to move, build, play, and create. Perfect for children ages 0-5.

June 8, 4-6 p.m.: Great Garden Series: Durango Botanic Gardens from Concept to Completion. Learn about the DBG projects – past, present and future.

June 11, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.: Oceans of Possibilities. Summer Reading Kickoff Party. There will be games, snacks, music and more.

June 14, 10:30-11:30 a.m. & 1-2 p.m.: Summer Reading Shows. Back-to-back special Summer Reading Program performances. Ann Lincoln will present a fun blend of magic, comedy and animal helpers. These events are free and open to the public.

June 15, 2-3 p.m.: SummerT|w|een Zone: Jellyfish Lanterns. Create colorful Jellyfish Lanterns. Ages 11-17.

June 17, 2-3 p.m.: Kids’ Club: Will It Float? Explore buoyancy by creating tinfoil boats. How much weight can your boat hold? Which design will hold the most pennies or blocks? Fold paper into the shape of a boat and then test its seaworthiness. For ages 5-12.

June 18, 10-11 a.m.: DPL Teen Council. For teens interested in making a difference in the library and community. Council meets once a month to plan fun programs, help shape the teen collection and more. For ages 12-17.

June 21, 10:30-11:30 a.m. & 1-2 p.m.: Summer Reading Shows: The Salida Circus. Back-to-back special Summer Reading Program performances. Salida Circus will present juggling, music, magic and more. These events are free and open to the public.

June 22, 2-3 p.m.: SummerT|w|een Zone: Watercolor Art and Dreams. Imagine an underwater scene brought to life with tissue paper watercolor and be inspired to create a vision board. Ages 11-17.

June 22, 4-6 p.m.: Great Garden Series: Cooking with Scraps. Learn how to turn vegetable scraps in to delicious and healthy meals with Nicole Clark from the La Plata County CSU Extension Office.

June 24, 2-3 p.m.: Kids’ Club: 3D Paper Fishbowls. Create an aquarium filled with ocean animals. For ages 5-12.

June 28, 10:30-11:30 a.m. & 1-2 p.m.: Summer Reading Shows: Rocky Mountain Puppets. Back-to-back special Summer Reading Program performances. Rocky Mountain Puppets will present “Dive in and Discover Yourself,” a show full of ventriloquism and laughs. These events are free and open to the public.

June 29, 2-3 p.m.: SummerT|w|een Zone: Light-up Anglerfish. Make a light-up anglerfish. Ages 11-17.

Summer Learning Program: The Pine River Library has planned an ocean-themed two-month Summer Learning Program. The program will run in June and July and will feature live animal visits, weekly programs for all ages and two outdoor movies. There will be storytimes for the youngest participants, twice weekly STEAM programs for kids, and weekly movies and crafts for teens. Adult events include soapmaking, a mindful parenting class, a campfire author talk and more. The library will host a kickoff event from 5 to 6:30 p.m. June 3 at the library park. Call for local artists: Local artists of all ages and all mediums are invited to submit samples of their work to be considered for inclusion in the Pine River Library Fall Community Art Show, which will run from October to December of this year. Two-dimensional pieces must be framed or professionally mounted, and there is also space available for 3D pieces, as well. Wednesdays, 10:30-11:30 a.m.: Seaside Storytime. Drop in every week to read books, sing songs and make a craft. All ages welcome. This program will be held in the library park, weather permitting.

For elementary ages:

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:30-11:30 a.m.: Ocean Explorers. Ocean-themed activities and challenges. Children ages 8 and older can attend without a parent, and children 7 and younger can attend with a parent or caregiver. See the special June Ocean Explorers page for a list of each week’s activities. This program will be held in the library park, weather permitting. Registration required. For teens

Mondays, 3-5 p.m.: Summer Theater and Film Club. Spend the summer learning about the different aspects that go into putting on a show or making a movie. Learn about the history and necessary skills essential in all aspects of theater and film.

Tuesdays, 12-2 p.m.: Teen Time. Crafts, movies, outdoor games and more.

For adults
Weekly Exercise Classes:
Yoga with Colleen

All you need is a yoga mat and a water bottle. Some yoga tools such as blocks, a blanket and a strap are encouraged. Cost is $10 for a single class, $45 for a five pass and $75 for a 10 pass. Checks can be made out to Bayfield Parks and Rec.

Mondays, 9-10 a.m.: Mostly Yin Yoga. Targets the connective tissue, which are the joints, bones and ligaments. We remain in many of the poses longer than in a traditional yoga class, which can be challenging for our body as well as our mind. The class may be slower paced, but it gives our mind time to quiet down, our breath to soften and our connective tissue to be stimulated. We will experience the balance between movement and stillness. Tools such as blocks and blankets are encouraged for this class. This class is accessible for all levels. We will experience the balance between movement and stillness.

Wednesdays, 8-9 a.m.: Yoga Flow. Yoga Flow lets us move dynamically from one posture to another. We create a meditative state with the flow and rhythm of our breath and the warming, lengthening and strengthening of our muscles in all the movements of our bodies.

Mountaintop Movement Classes

These classes are hosted by local fitness instructors Brian and Tammy Williams. Follow them on the Mountaintop Movement Facebook page for more information.

Mondays and Wednesdays, 8:15-9 a.m., HIIT Class. HIIT stands for High Intense Interval Training. This class consists of hard charging intervals of training designed to increase your heart rate for a set period of time, followed by a rest to bring your heart rate back down. Each class will consist of a demonstration, warm- up and 10 to 12 stations where focus will be on a specific body group. We will rotate through three rounds with a short break between each round. The workout is followed by a cool down and stretch. All equipment will be provided. These HIITs will be outside, plan accordingly and bring your own water.

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:15-9 a.m.: Full Body Fit Class. Use weight or light hand weights to work all body parts. The free classes are always similar in style but always different moves to keep it fun and fresh. You’ll need a yoga mat and light hand weights. If you don’t have them, there are extras that can be used. All ages and fitness levels are welcome.

June 3, 10-11 a.m.: Rambling Readers. Meet at the gate to Saul’s Creek just off U.S. Highway 160 in Bayfield on the first Friday of every month. Take a gentle walk and spend an hour discussing favorite reads. Call 884-2222, ext. 1, for directions to the meeting spot.

June 3, 5-6:30 p.m.: Summer Learning Kickoff Party. Sign your whole family up and enjoy pop-up games and activities with the library and Powerhouse Science Center in the park. The Powerhouse will bring all the fun of rocket science. Shoot for the sky with Alka-Seltzer Rockets, or dive into the world of rocket design by making a paper rocket that launches with air. The Powerhouse will also be launch bottle rockets. Everyone who registers gets a shark tooth.

June 4, 8 a.m.-12 p.m.: Friends of the Library Spring Book, Bake and Yard Sale. The Friends of the Pine River Library District has picked through stacks of books to sell their best picks. There will also be a yard sale, silent auction and baked goods for sale.

June 8, 10:30-11:30 a.m.: Special Water Safety Storytime: Storytime will focus on water safety with guest speakers from the SunUte Community Center. As La Plata County is an area with plenty of access to water to play in, it’s important that children and caregivers understand the risks and know how to make smart decisions around water.

June 8, 2-3:30 p.m.: Bookmarks Book Club. Open to adults. The library provides the books, the discussion leader, and a place to gather outside. Stop by the library to request a copy of the June book, “Firekeeper’s Daughter,” by Angeline Boulley or the July book, “The Five Wounds,” by Kirstin Valdez Quade.

June 10, 11 a.m.-12 p.m.: Reptile Day. Hang out with Asmo, the library snake, and a few of his slithering friends, plus their pal Julieta the tortoise.

June 11, 10-11:30 a.m.: Fly Fishing Basics. Learn the basics of setting up a fly rod and beginner casting skills. The San Juan Angler’s guides will provide all the gear, equipment, and tackle needed for the class. If you have your own rod and would like to practice with it, bring it along. Registration required, stop by the library or call 884-2222, ext. 1, to register.

June 14, 10-11 a.m.: Card Making at the Pine River Senior Center. Create two beautiful handmade cards for free.

June 15, 6:15 p.m.: Library Board of Trustees Meeting.

June 17, 11 a.m.-12 p.m.: Humane Society Adoption Event. Meet some of La Plata County Humane Society’s adoptable pets looking for their fur-ever homes. Learn about humane education and being an attentive pet parent from the LPCHS team members.

June 18, 7-8 p.m.: Campfire Author Talk with R.E. Burrillo. Join author, archaeologist and conservationist R.E. Burrillo for stories around the campfire. Burrillo will read from and discuss his latest books, “The Backwoods of Everywhere” and “Behind the Bears Ears” as he examines Indigenous and tourist cultures, the complexities of American archaeology and what it means to be a local.

June 21, 1-2:30 p.m.: Death Cafe. Pine River Library is one of many groups in 79 countries across the world that host Death Cafés, a time and place where people come to share food, drink tea or coffee, and discuss death openly and honestly. The aim is to increase awareness about death in order to help people make the most of their finite lives.

June 22, 6-8 p.m.: Soap Making. Learn the beginning steps to melt-and-pour soap making. Learn the proper temperature, scents, colorants and processes to have successful and useful projects. Participants will make soap in class to take home and take home a mold and an additional soap kit to practice. Registration required, stop by the library or call 884-2222, ext. 1, to register.

June 23, 12:30-1:30 p.m.: Spanish Conversation Hour. An hour of conversation. Practice Spanish in an informal setting. All ages and language levels welcome.

June 24, 12:30-1:30 p.m.: Pine River Senior Center Outreach. Books and DVDs available for check out, delivered to the Senior Center with an extended loan period (four weeks, rather than the standard one to three weeks) each month.

June 24, Sunset: Outdoor Movie: “Finding Nemo.” Free outdoor showing of the 2003 Pixar classic “Finding Nemo.” The movie will start around sunset. Bring a blanket or chair and enjoy a night at the movies under the stars.

June 29, 6-6:45 p.m.: Ocean Sound Bath. Calm your body and settle your mind as you are bathed in the sounds of the ocean drum, Tibetan singing bowls, Koshi chimes, crystal quartz bowls and more. During a sound bath, participants relax in a comfortable position, usually lying on their backs, and simply listen and stay present with the sounds and vibrations they are experiencing.Registration is required. Stop by the library or call 884-2222, ext. 1, to register.

Southwest La Plata Library District

Growing Readers Together Program: This six-week program for children ages 0 to 5 and their caregivers begins June 14 and 15 and will focus on kindergarten readiness.

Powerhouse Pass Program: Sunnyside Library and Fort Lewis Mesa Library now have Powerhouse Passes available for check out at each library. The pass will allow you and your immediate family free entry to the Powerhouse Science Center. Passes can be checked out on an adult library card for one week.

Sunnyside Book Club: The club meets at 5:30 p.m. the fourth Monday of every month at Sunnyside. Contact liz@swlplibrarydistrict.org for more information. All are welcome.

Free Mask and COVID Test Distribution: Free masks and COVID-19 rapid tests are available for pick up at both library locations. Limit five masks and four tests per person per month.
