Building success on organic coffee, breakfast burritos and fresh panini sandwiches, KD’s Alley Caffe has added another element to its eatery, Back Alley BBQ.
Located at 565 Goddard Ave. in downtown Ignacio next door to Farmers Fresh Market, KD’s has carved out a niche in a small town that has 12 other restaurants and food trucks all within a few minutes’ drive.
“We have the best coffee in town, and breakfast and lunch,” said Kristy Davis, who owns KD’s with her husband, Sean. “We have a steady following.” Some of her customers call KD’s “a hidden gem,” or only half-jokingly, “alley goodness.”
This year, the restaurant is celebrating its fifth year of business.
Along with a succulent pulled pork, highlights on KD’s menu include biscuits and gravy and breakfast sandwiches and croissants, then for lunch, the paninis are popular, along with salads made from organic mixed greens. Chicken salad, soups and red or green chili round out the menu, along with pastries made on the premises, such as pumpkin walnut scones.
A chocolate malt frappe is one of the featured coffee drinks, and a variety of organic coffee and espressos are available, along with chai tea.
Sean Davis started smoking meats about two years ago with an electric smoker, but recently the restaurant bought a wood-fired monster smoker that sits in front and attracts customers with the smoky scent wafting through the air. He creates his own rubs and sauces for flavor.
Pulled pork is available daily, made from smoked pork butt, and turkey, brisket and ribs rotate through the menu. Doing business in a small town, the restaurant tries to keep prices affordable. A pulled pork sandwich is $6.99, while ribs with two sides from a selection of potato salad, beans and coleslaw is $12.99.
Salads available include chef salad, Asian and Southwest varieties. The Southwest salad features guacamole, olives, green chiles, onions, tomatoes, cheese, and chipotle ranch dressing.
Daily specials include a gourmet grilled cheese with onions and apples and roasted red pepper tomato soup, along with other items that are popular with locals.
Kristy Davis is a native of Ignacio and was Miss Colorado Teen in 1980. Staff members Crystal Clark and Christina Neil help during the breakfast and lunch rush.
The restaurant opened five year ago, with Sean doing most of the renovations, with help from his wife, family and friends.
“We want to thank all of our customers for helping to make KD’s a success,” Kristy Davis said.
KD’s is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 to 1:30 p.m. on Fridays, and is closed on weekends.
