San Juan Basin Public Health’s Sexual Health Clinic has expanded its prevention services. PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, a daily medicine to prevent HIV among people at high risk for infection, is now available.
When taken daily, studies show that PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by over 99%. Rural areas have been disproportionately affected by lack of access to PrEP, so expanding access can help reduce rates of HIV infection in the region.
The health department can serve patients through a specific program that pays for visits, labs and medication for both insured and uninsured patients, eliminating the financial burden for many people.
The clinic is a one-stop shop for sexual health needs including: wellness exams, contraceptive methods, risk reduction counseling and testing, treatment of sexually transmitted infections and HVP and hepatitis immunizations.
