Scoreless second overtime sinks Bayfield against Alamosa

Wells has a huge game with 16 for Wolverines

A monster game from Madison Wells wasn’t quite enough for the Bayfield High School girls basketball team in a double-overtime scrap with the Alamosa Mean Moose on Saturday.

Wells scored 16 points, Cayanne Carlson added nine and Abby Tate scored seven, but a scoreless five minutes in the second overtime from the Wolverines saw Alamosa secure a 42-37 victory.

BHS (1-9, 1-6 3A Intermountain League) had led by five points after three quarters but was outscored 6-1 in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime.

Sophomore Miranda Geringer led Alamosa (5-7, 3-4 IML) with 11 points, while Emily Lavier finished with 10 and Marcy Macias had nine.

The Wolverines showed just how far they’ve come since a 34-11 loss at Alamosa earlier in the season. After losing numerous key players from a season ago, BHS has worked hard all year to find a rhythm. Saturday’s result came two days after Bayfield’s first win of the year in a 30-24 road win at Montezuma-Cortez.

BHS will host Dove Creek at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
