Shame on Herald for school reporting

Shame on the Durango Herald and the anonymous parent who felt it necessary to “skip to the front of the line” and sensationalize the Durango High school student activity on March 15 (“Balloon game at pep rally raises concerns”).

I question the motivation of the Herald and the parent. Why did this parent feel it necessary to go directly to the Durango Herald instead of the high school principal or the superintendent?

As far as the Durango Herald is concerned, I assume you just needed something to write about? If the Herald really wants to write about something important, why not focus on the great things that go on at Durango High School. Why not sensationalize the after-prom event that has kept over 400 Durango High School students a year safe and off the roads and hotel rooms for the past 15 years.

And why did the students who competed in the national history event on the same day as the pep rally get relegated to page 3?

The sensationalized balloon story does not help anyone or any cause. In regards to sexual consent and respect, let’s be very careful of letting the proverbial pendulum swing too far in the other direction. There are far more responsible ways to address these important issues.
