I have known Sean Smith for 24 years. We met when he returned home serving our country during Operation Desert Storm. From that day to this day, there is one thing that has always been true about Sean and that is he would do just about anything for anyone. Sean truly cares about people. Sean truly cares about his community. From that day, I first met him, Sean wanted to be in law enforcement. Sean has never considered what he does every day as a job.
I have had the opportunity to visit La Plata County on many occasions, and I wish my career would allow me to live there. During my visits, whether it was hanging out in downtown Durango or taking in a day at Durango Mountain Resort, I have seen how much Sean loves where he lives and the people he resides with.
When Sean made the decision to move his family to Oklahoma City and work for the Department of Justice, it was with a very heavy heart that he did so. Leaving La Plata County and the sheriff’s department was a burden he carried daily until his return. He knew why he needed to be back in La Plata County.
Knowing Sean as long as I have, I know the man Sean Smith, and I can assure you his desire to become sheriff is not about politics or a paycheck. When someone loves what they do every day, loves where they live and loves the people they serve every day – the people of La Plata County – how could that person not be the best choice for sheriff?
