Split in the heart of Texas

FLC volleyball debuts a new two-setter system after injury

A second trip to Texas in two weeks has produced the same result so far for the Fort Lewis College volleyball team.

The Skyhawks split two games in Kingsville, Texas on Friday, losing 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-20) to No. 16 West Texas A&M and beating Adelphi 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-22).

FLC (2-4) was playing an entirely new system with two setters after staring setter Heather Danny dislocated her hip last week and will miss six weeks.

Kenedy Clark and Ciara Krening split the duties.

“The nice thing about playing a 6-2 is we’re able to go a lot bigger,” FLC head coach Kelly Rifilato said. “We need to be able to put the ball away when we need to.”

Ashley Wells led the Skyhawks with 10 kills and just two errors in the first match.

“Our production as far as kills was limited based on the size of the (West Texas A&M) block,” Rifilato said. “We had to definitely avoid hitting into them.”

The Skyhawks picked up their second win of the season in a sweep of their second game of the day.

Stephanie Sonka paced FLC’s attack with 12 kills on the day.

Freshman Emily Dellenbach and sophomore Mallory Dill both had seven kills in the match.

“We’re getting some production from one of our younger kids, which is good to see,” Rifilato said.

FLC will stay in Kingsville for their next two matches Saturday, as it will play Eastern New Mexico at noon and American International College at 5 p.m.

“We were able to do some good things, but we’ve got to limit our unforced errors,” Rifilato said. “When you have two new setters setting, it’s tough.”
