Work to avoid planetary disaster

The headline “Much pomp, little action” (Herald, Sept. 21) about the climate marches in New York City timed in conjunction with the meeting of UN leaders doesn’t tell the whole story. Sure, the real decision of a climate treaty will be made in Paris in 2015, but the 400,000 people who marched in NYC are engaged in all sorts of action. The real place where we need action is in Washington, D.C. Thousands of volunteers in the United States, including in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, are working to pass legislation called carbon fee and dividend, to put a price on fossil fuels when they come out of the ground and give all the money back to American households. While the quote about accelerating toward the cliff is descriptive, carbon fee and dividend, if passed in 2015 and enacted the next year, is predicted to increase GDP 1 percent to 2 percent, add 2 to 3 million American jobs, and importantly, reduce U.S. carbon emissions 50 percent by 2035. That is how we can get the job of avoiding planetary disaster done, hold up our end of any international climate treaty that is coming, and give our economy a jumpstart.
