Kick That Cold to the Curb

Kick That Cold to the Curb

Colds hit often–and hard. The American Lung Association says adults catch two to four colds per year, while kids deal with six to eight. With people spending more time indoors during colder months, germs spread even faster. While there’s no cure, these simple strategies can help ease symptoms and get you back on your feet.

Stay Hydrated

Fluids help thin mucus and ease congestion. Stick to water, broth, and decaf tea with lemon. Warm liquids can also soothe a sore throat. Skip coffee, caffeinated tea, and soda–caffeine dehydrates the body.

Gargle Salt Water

A classic remedy that works. Gargling one teaspoon of salt in warm water can reduce swelling and ease throat pain.

Use a Humidifier

Cold air dries out nasal passages, making them more vulnerable to viruses. A humidifier adds moisture to indoor air, helping to relieve sore throats and congestion.

Get More Sleep

Rest is one of the best ways to boost the immune system. Aim for eight to ten hours of sleep to help your body fight off the virus.

Skip Unproven Remedies

Antibiotics don’t work on colds–they fight bacteria, not viruses. Johns Hopkins also notes that zinc and vitamin C show little evidence of stopping colds.

Colds may be unavoidable, but these simple steps can shorten recovery time and help you feel better, faster.
