Durango chef to appear on ‘Chopped’ this weekend

Durango’s Plate restaurant chef Tyler Henderson competes on “Chopped” in an episode that will air Sunday on the Food Network.

Will chef Tyler Henderson of Plate hear “You’ve been chopped” when he appears on the Food Network cooking competition Sunday?

Durangoans will have to tune in to find out. The show pits four chefs against each other. They are given several required ingredients and a well-stocked kitchen to create a series of courses in elimination rounds, starting with appetizers. Henderson’s episode is called “Fried Chicken Time.” He lucked out – the show following his is titled “Snail Snafus.”

Diners know Henderson from his work at Plate, the conversion of the Main Event sports bar, which reopened in April. The menu he prepares there includes fusions of international dishes including Southwest schnitzel, elk barbacoa tostada tower and Kahlua and agave pecan pie.

Durango considers itself a foodie town, and its chefs are showing their stuff on a larger stage. Last year, Carver Brewing Co. Executive Chef Dave Cuntz competed on “Guy’s Grocery Games,” coming home as the winner.
