Demons volleyball wins 2 of 5 at the Bruin Classic in Cherry Creek

The Durango High School volleyball team went 2-3 at the Bruin Classic volleyball tournament in Cherry Creek.

Heritage (5-3) defeated the Demons 2-1 (25-27, 25-15, 16-14) behind a strong defense, which produced seven total blocks.

Bella Bernazzani had eight kill-blocks against Heritage. Logan Clark had 16 assists, Gabi Razma had 15 digs, and Jessie Brammer had seven kills for DHS.

Haleigh Washington had 10 kills for defending Class 5A state champion Doherty (8-1), which beat Durango 2-0 (25-14, 25-23).

The Demons responded with a 2-1 (21-25, 25-20, 15-10) victory over Bear Creek, led by Brammer and Berkeley Davis with seven kills each, and a 2-0 (25-19, 25-19) win over Horizon, a match in which Mikayla Montoya had four service aces.

Bernazzani credited improved serving throughout the day, including both victories.

“Our serving was really on key this weekend,” she said in a phone interview Saturday night with The Durango Herald. “We spent all week of practice working on our serving, and I think it paid off.”

Ponderosa (5-3) served four aces in the Mustangs’ 2-0 victory (25-23, 25-15) against the Demons.

No statistics were available for Durango against Ponderosa or Doherty.

DHS (4-5) will continue its season-opening road swing Friday at Grand Junction Central.
