Rain washes away the Demons’ winless record

DHS boys tennis wins its first match of the season against Central

On a day when playing tennis at all seemed unlikely, the Durango High School boys tennis team won its first dual of the season 4-3 against Grand Junction Central.

Rain pushed the start time from 9 to 11 a.m. The Demons killed time during the delay at the mall.

Ryder Searle defeated Drake Giese in straight sets at No. 1 singles, and Fred Edwards defeated Lael Nordstrom in straight sets at No. 2 singles.

“They did a great job of staying focused and getting the job done,” DHS head coach Laura Ehlers said.

Dylan Blair won in 3, including the tiebreaker, against Bryce Atchison at No. 3 singles.

Wesley Komick and Liam Millar lost in three, including the tiebreaker, at No. 1 doubles to Cameron Thomas and Jon Leonard.

The match came down to the No. 2 doubles position, which finished last and also went into a tiebreaker.

Alec Ensign and Drew Downs held off Brent Bollinger and Trace Levinson in three.

Tim Martin and Blaise Page lost in straight sets to Brigham Beckstead and Ryan Larsen at No. 3 doubles.

Elijah Konikowski and Jake Schanefarber lost at No. 4 doubles in straight sets to Josh May and John Taber.

DHS will play Pueblo South on Thursday, then will compete in the Pueblo Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
