Healthy food options in Gem Village, one night a week

Area chefs team up to offer Tuesday night take-home service

On a weeknight in Bayfield, options for picking up dinner and heading home can be a little, well, limited.

Several restaurants in town are open only for breakfast and lunch and close in the afternoon, leaving a handful open for dinner.

Enter Healthy Homemade Tuesdays.

Healthy meals can be ordered the week before, and they’re ready for pick-up from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday nights.

The concept is the brainchild of Danica and Zach Frost, owners of the Grub Hub at the Billy Goat Saloon, and Kelsy Westwater of Bounty for the Belly, a catering service and food truck in Durango.

The service has been operating only for a few weeks but is growing in popularity thanks to word of mouth, they said.

Entrees have included salpicon lettuce wraps, green chili chicken enchiladas, vegetable pork stew, brussels sprout salad and deconstructed beef burritos.

“It’s a home-cooked meal made fresh for our customers,” Westwater said, noting that they use organic and natural ingredients as much as possible.

The partnership between the two is a way for two small businesspeople to bounce ideas off each other and see what might work in this market, Frost said. Her experience in restaurants is marketing and front-of-house, while Westwater is a trained chef.

The Grub Hub serves pizza, toasted sub sandwiches, nachos, salads and specials Wednesdays through Saturday nights, with brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sundays.

The healthy meal menu is released on Wednesday and closes on Friday or when all orders are filled. The cost is $22 for dinner for two.

The Tuesday service is eco-friendly, with items sent home in metal pans and jars that patrons are asked to return, and salads come in a recycled cardboard container.
